geospecific comp of the here and now in rock

After a few years of putting out records I’ve learned basically nothing. There are ebbs and flows of interest. Occasional financial successes mitigate overall losses and the records get out there through distribution, direct orders and promo copies. I stay away from streaming when possible. I quit almost every consignment dealing, rarely ship overseas or bring the distro out to shows. I engage with writers and real cultural critics as much as I can. I don’t listen to most demos or solicitations. I do this sometimes with and other times with the support of my wife Hélène and despite all the reasons not to.

Over the last 2 years, I have been going to a lot of shows, mostly local. Thought to capture some of the energy around me somehow. The idea for this record is a biproduct of fertile soil. Each of these bands sort of blindly fit like a puzzle. It’s a geo-rock scene. There were 4 others, half a dozen submissions and lofty ideas about a 2x7”. Each of the bands on this comp operate in their own circles/mannerisms/timeline. They all hail from Montreal, most are anglophone expats from elsewhere in the country.

So in a way the common thread of this comp is live music, gathering spaces for overlapping communities.
